Second Meeting (ITO Project)

In this meeting, we will briefly discuss a simple scenario plan, a sound design plan, and the plan for filming the interview.

First, Jin has drafted a rough scenario that starts with “How are you?” and includes lighthearted and simple questions like “Since you came to study in the UK, do you have a favorite café?”—questions that resemble those typically asked to students. I also find this approach amusing, but I suggested that we include more specific questions so that the audience can get a sense of who Itō Hirobumi was and what he means to Koreans. Additionally, since the UCL monument depicts a young Itō, I thought it would be interesting to ask questions about his future and aspirations, such as “How do you imagine yourself in ten years?” The same approach applies to interviewing the old banknote. For example, we could ask, “Looking back on your achievements, how much did studying in the UK influence your career?”

For the sound design, we plan to follow our initial idea: recording sounds from the monument and banknote, then using a vocoding technique to layer them over a recorded voice reading the script. Jin suggested an alternative approach—using either media recordings of Itō’s voice or creating responses solely from the sounds of the monument and banknote without vocoding. We decided to experiment with multiple versions and choose the one that best fits our vision. Additionally, we considered using AI-generated sound. Since it would be difficult for us to record a Japanese-accented English voice or an authentic Japanese pronunciation, we are exploring the possibility of using AI-generated sounds and then applying vocoding.

Regarding the interview video, since the monument is fixed in place, creating a storyboard for that part is straightforward. However, the challenge lies with the banknote. Our current plan is to request cooperation from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the UK, and we have already sent an email asking for filming permission. If filming there is not possible, the best alternative would be to find an office or another location that resembles the atmosphere of a consulate.

At our next meeting, we plan to record the actual sounds of the monument and banknote. To prepare for this, we will borrow the necessary recording equipment.
