The material we are going to record this time is Gourd. Gourd is a type of plant, and in Korea, it is mainly used as a water basket by hollowing out the inside after drying, using itself as a part of instrument. In traditional Korean musical instruments, it was used for the body of the wind instrument, the Senghwang, and the tuning peg of Haegeum, a string instrument.

I wanted to use the resonance created by the gourd’s unique hollowness, so I cut it open with a saw to remove all the seeds. There were only a few sounds I could use, but the resonant sound itself would be great for percussion.
