What is being professional?

What does it mean to be professional, or to appear professional? I personally believe that I am not yet professional, because I am not a professional in this field. Nevertheless, once we move beyond the identity of being students and begin to define ourselves within society, there would be a problem if we still appeared like students rather than professionals.

Let us imagine a situation. By chance, you meet someone and start talking, and during the conversation you both feel interested in working together. As a result, you exchange your profiles, such as your social media pages. However, when you look at the other person’s profile, you see a long stream of everyday photos and videos mixed together with their work. In such a case, could we truly take that profile seriously?

When thinking about becoming professional, I believe it is not necessarily about becoming a professional in itself, but about constructing a persona that appears professional. In contemporary society, where social media and various digital platforms are highly developed, the pages through which we introduce ourselves also represent our identity. In the same way that we project aspects of ourselves into the artworks we create and consider how they will be received by audiences, when creating platforms that introduce who we are, we must also consider what we want to communicate through them, how they will be perceived, and how they should be expressed.

In this assignment, through materials such as a CV, an artist statement, and a website, I need to find ways to communicate who I am to people who know nothing about me and who may not necessarily be experts in the field. In the upcoming blog posts, I will reflect on what aspects are important when creating these documents and platforms, what methods I will use to shape them, and how they may ultimately be perceived by others.
