Plans for Installation

It seems wise to plan ahead for the exhibition work in the third year, so I intend to make preparations in advance. Although I am not yet sure when or in what format the exhibition will take place, I plan to experiment mainly with ideas I wanted to realize in the second year but could not due to time and budget constraints.

The idea is as follows: There are six speakers. Each speaker faces its pair, arranged in three opposing pairs installed on rails that move back and forth, drawing nearer and farther from each other. The total six speakers, grouped as three pairs, will explore the theme of conflict. One pair represents conflicts between individuals, the second between the individual and society, and the third between societies. The closer the speakers come to each other, the louder the volume becomes.

I intend to develop this idea along two main directions.

First, technological experimentation. To realize this concept, ample experimentation with motors, rails, and speakers is necessary. However, since I gained considerable knowledge about the speakers in previous installations, this technical experimentation will focus on motors and rails. Motors come in various types with distinct functions, and rails used to move speakers also vary in method and specific applications. Therefore, I plan to investigate and experiment with these aspects, with particular attention to issues related to overload and overheating. Because heavy load or prolonged operation might cause motor overheating, I will primarily research suitable environmental conditions and appropriate motor selection to prevent such problems.

Second, conceptual development. The idea centers on the theme of conflict. Since many have already explored conflict philosophically, I will prioritize understanding those perspectives. Additionally, I aim to study modern significant types of conflict and consider which types of sounds would appropriately express them. Moreover, I plan to concretize all variables such as the number of speakers, rail direction, and length based on rational arguments or aesthetic decisions.
